The Death Penalty
The death penalty, or capital punishment, is the execution of someone by judicial process as punishment for a capital crime or capital offense. Capital punishment has become a very controversial issue over the twentieth century due to changing views and legal challenges. Executions came to a halt in 1967 and eventually the Supreme Court placed a moratorium on it in 1972 but later upheld it in 1977, under certain conditions.
As a moderate supporter of the death penalty I believe that the pros outweigh the cons and it is a good thing for the country and its citizens. Debate centers around questions of deterrence, public safety, sentence equity, and the execution of innocent people. I have researched the arguments for and against the death penalty and find that the arguments opposing are not all that convincing.
